It is that time of year again. The gardens look fantastic and are taking off. In come the rodents. Thankfully the squirrel is no longer a problem as likely a fox enjoyed a meal. But the rabbit...oh the rabbit! Munched down my raspberries and found him near my strawberries.
Out came the cayenne. I buy a 5 pound bag for the summer and store it in a plastic container to keep it dry. I bought a flour sifter years ago that I keep with these. All you have to do is fill the sifter and spread it all over your garden. Somehow leaves don't mind getting some on them. I gently tap it off and let it fall to the ground.
If ants are an issue, I add flour and/or cornmeal to this and apply them together. This year that doesn't seem to be an issue.
The cayenne should be applied liberally. And there you go. I have heard that the cayenne bothers their noses and they dislike how it feels on their paws. Whatever the reason, it has worked for me as long as I don't go stingy with the application.
Here is to a rodent free garden and being able to enjoy the results of the work we put in to have fresh produce and herbs to enjoy.
